Regarding Note 2, I think the Eliot of Prufrock clearly had a sense of humour (hippopotamuses, sapient sutler bees, and so on), but sadly lost it soon after. Perhaps another casualty of his marriage?
If you consider that the majority of the 20th Century's genocides all began in April, it is indeed the cruelest month...
