Reading this in Lisbon adds a tinge of sadness to the end of the year. You and I could have been neighbors! As always, reading you is my favorite part of the day.
Why does all of your note before "The Literary Part" sound like grist for a new novel? I envy your time in these magical places and admire you seeking out their unsettling mix of authorial reality, imagination, and memory. I did something similar several times in Franz Kafka's Prague and Eduard Mörike's Urach. Experiences I will never forget where one's surroundings became one with the fullness one's own intellect.
Really been looking forward to reading the Wojnarowicz reissue, this was a good reminder to dive in. Hope you have a happy and healthy new year, Patrick.
I'm deeply sympathetic with your attempt to live in Lisbon. It looks like you went wrong when you trusted a government to do something on time. For what it's worth, I was once in your situation, trying to write and look for a steady position somewhere in the publishing world, thinking about moving to a foreign-to-me midwestern city where my wife at least had family, when an old friend called to offer me a job. It turned out to be fun. One never knows.

Some great reflections here Patrick; glad to read that despite it all, you’re doing well
So glad to have found your writing again 🤍
Loved this, as ever, Patrick and agree re Audition. I want to read the Sally Mann!
